“I want to marry myself! To plan for a solo wedding, to marry myself, to declare my forever love for myself to the world!” Attractive comedienne Ping vows to become a viral Youtuber. She concocts a plan to put on a show of marrying herself in what was meant to secure both money and likes. In this satire of marriage and the individual self, nothing is left untouched: women, men, organised religion, homosexuality, the filthy rich, not to mention ye good old mother! Love yourself in Say I do to me, won’t you?

The London screening on 30th March will be followed by an in-person talk by Dir. Kiwi CHOW, hosted by Mo, Lai Yan Chi. With the exception of Edinburgh, all other screenings will feature a pre-recorded post-screening Q&A.

  • Kiwi Chow, born in 1979, majored in directing at the School of Film and Television at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In his second year, he completed his first film "Nian" (2003). He graduated in 2004 with a First Class Honors Bachelor of Arts degree and his graduate work "Grandma's House" (2004) won the "Best Director" award at the Academy. After graduation, he participated in the production of several films, such as "Fearless" (2006), as a special feature director and editor. He has been a visiting lecturer at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts since 2005, and has directed numerous short films that have won many local and international film festival awards, gaining much attention. In 2013, he completed his Master of Fine Arts in Film Production at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and made his directorial debut with the feature film "A Complicated Story" (2013), produced by Johnnie To, which was invited to premiere at the 37th Hong Kong International Film Festival. The segment "Self-Immolation" in the film "Ten Years" (2015) won the "Best Film" award at the Hong Kong Film Awards. His subsequent film "Beyond the Dream" (2020) became one of the top 10 highest grossing films in Hong Kong for the year, and won the "Best Adapted Screenplay" award at the 57th Golden Horse Awards. In 2021, his documentary "Revolution of Our Times" was invited to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and won the "Best Documentary" award at the 58th Golden Horse Awards.

  • The movie was inspired by a news report from 2013, which revealed that some people were marrying themselves. I found this to be a unique and intriguing concept, and it became a fresh new theme for me to explore in my work. The pursuit of novelty has always been the driving force behind my creativity. I was also genuinely moved by the idea of a real-life "solo wedding." Some say that the biggest problem people face is their inability to be honest with themselves. Throughout my own personal growth, I have had times where I resented myself and wanted to hide my past mistakes, feeling ashamed to utter the phrase "love yourself" with any real sincerity. Beyond the comedic aspect of the film, the self-wedding ceremony serves to probe our inner selves, confronting the soul that feels unlovable. In every era, society needs honesty and humor, and I hope this film can bring that to everyone.
